There are few ways to become a paralegal
- Obtain a high school diploma or a general equivalency diploma (GED)and be able to pass a competency exam in their area of specialization or field.
- Obtain a high school diploma or GED, and a minimum two years of law-related experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney or other person in a law related field; or performing substantive or procedural work as a paralegal.
- Obtain a baccalaureate degree in any field, plus not less than one year of experience performing substantive or procedural legal work as a paralegal.
- Obtain a certificate of completion from a paralegal program,
which is institutionally accredited but not American Bar Association, ABA, approved, which program requires successful completion of a minimum 24 semester units or equivalent in legal specialization courses.
- Obtain a certificate of completion from an ABA approved paralegal program.
